Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
