Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
